The Ocean Plait rope mat is formed entirely by hand using the traditional maritime knotwork.

There are no moulds, jigs, glue, or shortcuts. The rope is laid, dressed, rested, and finished slowly, allowing the form to settle naturally rather than being forced into shape.

The ends are finished using traditional methods for long-term structural strength.

Mats are made individually, in small batches, on the canal.

This is a traditional decorative Ocean Plait rope floor mat, made using heritage ropecraft techniques.

The Ocean Plait is a knot historically used by sailors aboard ship to create durable, decorative mats. In keeping with that tradition, the rope is laid, dressed, rested, and finished slowly by hand, allowing the structure to find its own equilibrium.

The result is a substantial, flexible floor mat with quiet character. It makes a subtle impression at a threshold, in an entrance hall, or anywhere a considered object belongs.

The mat is made from durable synthetic rope chosen for its resilience and ability to hold form over time. Nothing is glued. The ends are finished using traditional methods, creating a structurally sound, long-lasting piece.

Because of the nature of its construction, the mat remains slightly flexible and may respond to its environment. With use, it will soften and settle — part of the character of a traditionally formed rope mat. If needed, it can be gently nudged back into shape by hand.
